Mid Century Cadillac Discussion / Re: 1955 hood springs

I've restored several 55-56 cars and one thing to know is that there's more than one position for the hood spring to attach at its lower end and it can make quite a difference.  I rigged up a tool similar to the one that they used in 41.  Lubrication can also make quite a difference.

Hi Walt, I've had the same problems with my springs over the years.

I bought these on eBay and kept my fingers crossed that they would do the job.........I always wonder that "new" means built from inferior quality materials or not the correct tension.

But these kept the hood up and so I bought another set for an Eldorado I have.

As you know, this is one scary job to do so please be careful!

Hi Walt, I must admit that my good seems a bit low when it's open. I used to think that this was normal but from reading posts over the last few years I think that it wasn't like that from the factory. Btw I had the hinges re rivetted etc but that doesnt affect the height when open. Phil

Mid Century Cadillac Discussion / 1955 hood springs
« Last post by walt c on May 30, 2018, 09:05:50 AM »
Hi guys!
I have owned and driven my 1955CDV for 19yrs and after assembling it (I received it as a basket case)ran into a hood that wouldn't stay up. After trying all three lower spring adjustment positions and failing, I did a  reliable fix by installing a hold open rod from a local junk yard. Time marches on and I finally  decided to finally change the springs out with some USA made ones. Still NG! Has anyone else ran into "hood not staying up" and what was your fix? ....??troubled in Tulsa??.....walt

I was away for a while, Art.  The chrome shop told me they can repair mine for $30 each. Worth it.
