Will a 1964 brake booster fit in a 1962 de Ville?
« on: June 16, 2017, 11:39:48 AM »
Hi everyone. I am hoping I can get some help from the Cadillac community on this one. I have a 1962 de Ville and I have a hiss when I depress the brake pedal. The brakes feel like they have a lot of fade and require more force to stop. I am assuming the booster has a vacuum leak and needs replacing. I can get a booster for a 1964 Cadillac relatively easily from my local Canadian Napa retailer and by the photos, it looks the same as the Cardone that Caddy daddy sells that fits 1962, 1963, 1964 & 1965. Does anyone know if the booster from the 1964 will fit in place of the 1962?

First I would be sure that your booster is bad. I can't imagine you could hear a booster leak from inside the car.  The look to see if you have a 4 bolt MC or 2 bolt.

I have a Bendix 4 bolt boosterin the car but the previous owner installed a 2 bolt master cylinder on it. The master cylinder looks to be a Delco model.

It sounds wrong to mess with brakes this way.  My guess is the 64 would work.  But ask Ron Austin.  You will find him on here somewhere.  Check the for sale site he's on their for sure.  He has 63/64 and should know your answer. Buying a old used part might put you in the same place you are now. Maybe your MC seal to booster is bad or the O ring not installed. What are you trying to do with the car? You doing your own work? Know what your doing? This information will help us help you. Dave

Hi Dave. I want to replace my booster in my 62. They don't sell an off the shelf booster for 1962, unless your willing to pay $500. Caddy Daddy sells a booster that supposedly fits 62, 63, 64, and 65. It has the same part number as the one from NAPA auto parts. I am wondering if anyone has used this part before. I know there are internal physical differences between the 64 booster and the two offered in 1962 (the Bendix and the Delco Moraine).

I am not messing with my brakes in a bad way. I am trying to figure out if a part from another model year will bolt in place or if anyone has run into this in the past.

62 and 63 boosters are the same. The 64 is the same size and bolt pattern, but different internals. With that said, the 64 booster will fit your 62 with no problems.

When I said messing with I was referring to someone using a 2 bolt MC on a 4 bolt booster.  I somehow knew Russ would know the answer. Call prior brakes at 1 800 444-4821 or 972 338-1090 they sell all the brakes parts to caddy daddy and the likes! We got a 62 booster and MC for a 61 from them.

I used to run a 67 booster with a generic Delco master -- there is a lot of interchangeability between 61 and 67.  I believe all the boosters interchange across those years regarding the firewall mounting.  Later boosters (e.g. 69) will require firewall mods.

A two-bolt master will work perfectly on a 4-bolt booster.  I would not go the other way around since the 4-bolt master may be designed in a way that it requires the force to be taken up across the 4 bolts and one might crack the casting under very hard breaking.  The boosters are built in a very stable way, and I have no doubt the two lower bolts of a 4-bolt booster are capable of handling the force.

I currently use a generic Delco master (2-bolt) on my stock 4-bolt booster.  I do have a proper 4-bolt master (Thank you Dave!) waiting to be rebuilt for the proper look.
