G'day everyone, long time not on here, so busy these days, hopefully some one out there can help me, I have had my 4 speed Jetaway tranny rebuilt twice now since 2013, this should not have happened, but we do cruise my caddy everywhere, last trip in 2014 was across Australia, 7500 miles, and we average 10,000 miles in her each and every year, the Jetaway is just not up to scratch, I presume there is a number out there that have done the Turbo 400 Conversion?

Mine is a 61 Cadillac deVille 6 Window Sedan, have attached updated pic, I have found one place that has an adaptor plate,  This is the link for the part I need, anyone deal with Speedway Motors?

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Wilcap-CAD-350-Early-Cadillac-to-Chevy-Transmission-Adapter,8762.html

Will need a new starter too, which they have the link on that link, so will be also needed.

Do you know any alternative to this, or should these guys be my best choice?

Regards and safe roads Milton Watkins (aka CaddyDaddy here in Australia)

HI Milt, good to hear from you again. I believe Chris Oz put one in his car and really liked it. I haven't seen him on here in a bit but you might try sending him a message anyway.

Hey there, thanks, yes I wish I had the time to read all the posts here, I love it and miss it, must come back more often.

Have had the issue resolved, give it one more chance, got freshly rebuilt 61 tranny off Tom Dean here in Australia, he'll be fitting it and rebuilding it, quite a workshop he has there, he is one of two Hydromatic specialists we have here in Australia, so its in safe hands, maybe my box was never really fixed from the start, had a vibration that I could not get rid of after the first rebuild.

So lucky I got across the Nullarbor and to have got around so far, will be nice to have a good box in the Caddy, maybe will last a long time like it should.

If this don't work I'll go the route of the Turbo 400, but let's all hope it goes well.

Thanks. Milt

I have had massive problems with this transmission. But after I have found the right guy to do it, it is unbelieveably smooth, quick and absolutely dry. The car changed hands and did not run for 20 years because of the transmission... Therefore I would consider a swap unnecessary but it is critical to find the right person to do the job. Good look! I know it is possible although I was desperate for some time.

Hi all,

I did do a trans swap, but I used a T700R4, with overdrive and lock-up convertor, the difference in how the car drives is amazing.

The shifts on the Jet-A-Way are smooth, I will give it that, but not much else nice can be said about it if you plan on driving your car HARD.

The T700 has a .69 overdrive top gear, so I am now spinning at 1650 rpm doing 65mph.
It will light the tires from a stop if you want it to, I know, very Un-Cadillac of me, but it make the car so much nicer to drive.

I left the stock convertor (not a hi stall) I did change the trans governor though, so the changes are earlier as the heavier car with taller tires etc needs, so a Gov out of a chev pick-up was used.

I still have my old trans at home, I could put it back if I ever wanted to as there was no chopping involved on my car, but I doubt I ever would.

Happy to help if anyone want more information.

Hi Everyone, thanks for answering my call for anyone that has done the T400 fit out, it looked like my only option till I found Tom Dean, he is 72, one of two Hydro tranny specialists we have here in Australia, so I am lucky this guy lives only an hour from where I live, he had a good Jetaway there already and did a total rebuild, used some of the external parts of my old one that was suitable to use, found the foot brake bar and spring missing, but he is working on this to replace it, we'll buy another if we have too, but this may be an import from the USA.

On inspection of my old jetaway, they found what possibly caused the vibration, the guys that rebuilt my engine 7 years ago told me that they had to make up new compression springs that are located somewhere around the drive plate?? Sorry a bit vague here as I am not a mechanic, just what I was told from Tom and what I remember from when I had my engine rebuilt, anyway these engine rebuilders instead of getting new springs they had them custom made at my expense, of course, the ones they made did nothing except sit there, over the last 7 years one fell out or at least disintegrated another had half of the spinrg left and the others were all loose so with the one missing and the others about to come out, or at least disintegrate this is what was causing the vibration.

So looking forward to picking up my caddy, just hope they solve the bar and spring problem with the foot brake. Thanks for your message. Regards Milt

I'd love to hear about the tranny swap, as my Jetaway tranny is showing some signs of going out.  A write up would be MUCH appreciated!!
