1954 Coupe DeVille "fake air scoops" parts wanted
« on: December 17, 2014, 12:49:54 PM »
Hi everyone, I have a nice rechromed pair of the fake airscoops on my car, but they are missing the stainless steel part that is attached to them [these have always been missing since I have owned the car]. Does anyone have a pair or either side available for sale [I do need both sides] - the mazac part can be wrecked, it doesn't matter, I just need the stainless steel part. Phil

Phil,

I am confused, which is normal for me.

Are you talking about the rear scoops for the AC air inlets? If so I have a few in the back garage. I believe they are the same for 1954 thru 1956.

Hi John, sorry,no, I should really look up the part number. They are the mouldings that are on the side of the rear fenders, running from below the back window [on a Coupe] to the top of the sill moulding - they sort of represent the airscoops on the side of an airplane. I need to post a photo really - I'll do that in the week. Thanks, Phil

Good luck.  I found a pair on ebay a couple of years ago and returned them because the stainless strips were badly damaged, crushed and split.  Haven't seen any since.  The passenger side is very difficult to find because the passenger side is damaged more frequently than the driver side.

Think I now know the part you are referring to. The Master Parts Guide refers to them as "guard, stone" and I believe they are referring to a two piece unit. There is the fake vent cast piece which was attached to a narrow stainless protective piece about 29 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. They are attached together with a few tiny screws into finely threaded pot metal inserts as I recall. Not the best set up. Sometimes the piece you are looking for would come off in time, after taking some dings. I believe the Limo models from '54, '55 and '56 used them as well, and are the same part numbers; 462 5820 (RH) and 462 5821 (LH), however, I see different part numbers for other '54 models. 54-6019X, 6219, 19X are 462 4190 for RH side, and 54 6019X, 6219, 19X are 462 4191 for LH side. If you have access to a parts guide see section 31.0650. I don't know what is different about the Limo part from the other regular 54 drivers.

I mention this as perhaps the trim piece you are looking for is the same although the fake vent is different? In that event you may still have additional parts options just to get that narrow trim piece. I don't have any of these vents (I too thought of the AC vents first). I needed the driver side narrow trim piece for my '56 Limo which I was lucky to obtain. None of the screw threads were any good and I had to use an industrial bonding agent and some creative clamping with the aid of a metal adhesive to "tak" the two together prior to using the bonding agent. I am looking for these parts as well, but for a 50, 51, or 52 Series 75.  Driver's side needed.

Thanks for the info Clay. I am still in need of the stainless parts, my pot metal bits are pretty good, but the stainless bits went AWOL before I ever got the car ! Ed Cholakian had an NOS one for one side and a dinged up one for the other and wanted $350 a piece. I would've bought the NOS one for that, but had my wife with me and she was not very keen [the mistake was mine I should've left her in the Casino !].

Phil,

Are the 54 and 55 the same for what models? Got a casting  number?

Last year bought a bunch pf 54 & 55 Parts and I think there might be some in the pile.
