One less...How many Sedan de Ville survived?

Good question.  Cadillac did build a lot of them in '56 but one hardly ever sees a Sedan Deville today. I didn't give it much thought until now...... unlike the rest of the 54-56 Cadillacs, the '56 SDV was a one year only body design.

Saw this car at Spring Carlisle.  In fact, the car is not painted.  Rather, that is a wrap that was put on the car.  Probably all done with digital electronics; viz. PhotoShop?

Lou,

Any more info on the 1956 Coupe DeVille, Rocky Mountain High? That could possibly be my car!

Looks like Colorado Springs to me, with Pikes Peak in the background.

Curious Johnny wants to know.

Folks,

This is a sales offering from Maverick Motors.

Seems they build their car on a El Dorado chassis so must have to 1953 or later.

If you want to order one the area code is 408.

Enjoy

Jose,

That Lou is quick.

Found a little more information:

My friend got it from a man whose farther worked for the company. Said it was on a 1953 & 1954 chassis. The body was all fiberglass and 4 workmen could lift the body off the car. The guy sold the car and believes it is the only one left.

What fun

Folks,

visited a friend, and CLC member, in Pueblo this week. We took a drive SW to Buelah, Colorado.

Bill asked us to go by where this 1957 Seville had been parked for years. Not sure if it is for sale or not. But what a waste of a good Cadillac.

See attached pictures.

It's emerald green now. Not sure how this one left the factory. This car was for sale in England back in 2011, last I heard it was currently for sale in Austria. Presentable car but has many authenticity issues, most notably the standard series 62 hood.

Here is a 47-52 hupcap medallion undergoing restoration.  Stripped to bare brass, polished, field painted with translucent ruby red paint (a candy apple red in urethane).  Still to come are the little details and then a top coat of clear.  Fun project, even though I don't have a 47-52 car at this time...

That 59 Limo was my favorite car at the show. 50s Limos don't often make an appearance at the GNs so it was a treat to see it. After I shot some video of it rolling onto the field following the parade I got talking to the owner who said that other than paint, carpet and headliner, it was original.

My first Cadillac, now sitting outside under a car port, with the back 1/3 sticking out from under the roof.  To replicate the strip-to-bare-metal, lacquer paint job I did would cost $15K today.  Current owner is letting that go to rot by exposing it to the elements for the last two years.  It's a shame...

Here's a photo taken on Sunday at the Vintage Hotrod Association UK event - time trials on Pendine Sands in Wales. I have no interest in Hot Rods [usually pieces of cr*p on wheels IMHO], but we supplied clothing to the track staff so went along. Anyway, this 1950 Coupe was the nicest car there, very original and untouched and that's my wife Jo in the background reminiscing about the 51 CDV she used to own !!

I know it is post 60 caddy ,but here is a picture of my dad ,his 62 coupe and 64 bsa thunderbolt 650 in the driveway of his moms place when he was 24
I came home from hospital after being born in a 62 coupe and was hooked
I remembered that car until someone  crashed into in  a parking lot in 76 when I was 7
when you are little, the windshield makes a great slide for a 4 yr old butt

then there is a picture of me,my 62 caddy ragtop and my Yamaha 1100 virago
at my house, I have  never moved and officially bought house from my mom in 1999  as my dad bought it from his mom in 1969 , and my dad died in 1990
the second pic was taken in 2001 .I was 32
the period ford econoline van on the road happened to be my work van and was done it same colour decals as one in original photo, total coincidence so I parked my van there
took about 4 hrs to set up the pic same as original
I STILL have the same  bsa motorcycle and soon as it is back in one piece and running,i will retake picture with same bike in it

At Chevy in the hole in flint Michigan the guy who worked in the pits name was gypsey jack. He had the walls papered in pin up girls and play boys. My grandma worked with him from time to time and he would apologize. Before he died he lived down the road from me kind of a hippie collector. Unfortunately after he died people stripped the house.

I drew this cartoon which was published in the now defunct Cadillac Club of Canada's Quarterly newsletter, way back in 1976. I owned a 1956 Coup de Ville at the time and with my limited artistic talents, I tried to portray it. The result was this weird hybrid cross of a '56 Coup/Eldo and a '58 Cadillac. The Caddy is seen cruising unaware, down the highway with a pair of aliens above in their Flying Saucer who have the 'eye' for her! Enjoy! Clay/Lexi

Yep, can't miss John's car! It is interesting to search the web for shots of your caddy (taken by other people). These unknown pictures are out there. Have a look and you might find a shot of your ride. I found one of 'Lexi' which was shot at a Toronto car show, (see pic). When at Steve Plunkett's huge Fleetwood Country show I found flyers featuring my car which advertised an upcoming vintage Cadillac car show! See pic of the old flyer. I had attended that event the previous year which was when my car was photographed. It also made it onto a video. I believe this event is being hosted again at the Doon Heritage site on August 28th, for those wishing to attend (and within driving distance of southern Ontario). That show is in Kitchener Ontario, Canada. The show is Cadillac focused and worth checking out. Clay/Lexi

More interesting ads. Looks like a 1955 Series 75, though ad says body by Fisher, (no mention of Fleetwood). Note the apparent Eldo off to the left. Also check out this 1957 Harrison ad for AC equipped GM cars and the Revell model box with the Eldo. Clay/Lexi

That is sad, not scrapped yet then. I have stayed on the Queen Mary twice as it is now a floating hotel. Nothing comes near the splendour and decor of those old cruise liners. Phil. PS I'm back in England now.

Phil I am envious! I always wanted to spend a night there. I did have a tour of the Queen Mary and remember that my first impression while walking her deck was that it had lots of that "old car smell". Must have been all the old wooden deck planks, oil and grease plus the electrical stuff, combining to make that odour. I was on my honeymoon and the wife thought I was nuts, but I tried to tell her how much car guys love that smell! It was a hotel even then, and I wanted to spend the night but was unable to. I knew that it had a reputation of being quite Haunted which made the wife uncomfortable. An old episode of Unsolved Mysteries featured a segment on the ghosts of the ship including an investigation done by noted Parapsychologist William Roll. Would like to return there one day. Clay/Lexi

Roger, thanks. I shed a tear as well when the owner lost all to the tax man and the salvage yard next door acquired them and then crushed them all. I tried to save two 1956 Series 75s, but no luck. Very sad. There was even a Brougham on the property. I was able to buy all the contents from the Limos trunk plus a drive train and a few other items. But it was a sad day to see them all go. Lovely, though that Egyptian styled hood ornament depicted was actually developed for Stutz in the 1920s. Don't think those ever adorned a Cadillac hood, at least as far as I know. I as well thought that 1956 marked the end of Cadillac's Flying Goddess (and possibly the longest one ever produced), but now I seem to recall that the 1959 Cadillac Brougham had a stylized variation of it. Then it disappeared again, and I believe this time for good. Clay/Lexi
Title: Re: Picture of the Day Thread
Post by: South_paw on February 17, 2018, 06:37:15 AM
Yep, 1959 was the last year not 1956 as the sign says. @David King was the goddess on the 59 EB a new casting or a modified 56 goddess?
Title: Re: Picture of the Day Thread
Post by: Roger Zimmermann on February 17, 2018, 06:54:10 AM
The first time I saw a '59 Brougham, I had the feeling that this hood ornament was added later by one owner. Apparently not as it's in the parts list, but it is an anachronism on this car. Fortunately, for 1960 it was gone.
The part numbers are different for the '56 ornament and '59 one for the Brougham; however, if the '56 tooling was modified, it would generate another part number.
Title: Re: Picture of the Day Thread

The EB version in '59 was its own.  A very modern interoperation.

This is mine off/on '#56.

Post by: Lexi on February 17, 2018, 10:53:23 AM
I have never seen one up close. I was not sure whether any anatomical features remained on the '59 EB hood ornament. Looks like the answer to that is none. I suppose by this late date the intention was to give the piece more of a rocket or jet-like look, yet retain the general shape of the older unit. Reminds me somewhat of the mid-fifties Chevy hood ornaments, minus the vertical wings (and beak). If that was GMs intention, then perhaps the Goddess in persona did die in '56? Thanks for posting those photos. Clay/Lexi

Hi Clay/Lexi,
I had a good chat with the owner of the flower car, he comes from Missouri and trailered the car there. He said if it had just been a couple of hundred miles he would have driven it. He said he had been looking for one for a long time. I wish I could remember who he said made it - it was either Hess or Superior. Whichever it was he said that they had stamped the roof panel in one. He had assumed before stripping back the paint that it would be a cut and shut standard coupe roof, but it wasn't. The front and rear windshields were standard Coupe items. The rear bumper and chrome moulding for the rear fenders were also custom made, not standard Cadillac items. The owner had a lot of original Von Dutch stuff also [including original business cards], so I am guessing he is a hot rodder at heart! I like things standard, not hot rodded! It was the most interesting car there in my opinion.

Phil thanks for the update! I would have loved to chat with that guy. Very interesting comments about the roof, glass and trim. I remember seeing a Youtube video on this car as well as some stills, (see link below). I am glad he did not hot rod it as that would have ruined this particular vehicle. Badging on the car says Superior and I believe this model is the Coup de Fleur. Great that you talked with the owner and thanks for posting your comments. Clay/Lexi

About two miles from my house there is a full service gas station in a small town near me in Southeastern Wisconsin. I mean a small town three bars, barber shop, a church and this gas station. I keep sanding and buffing this car to remove the patchwork of brushed-on touch up paint (and the previous owner had a big fat brush and he wasn't afraid to use it!).  When I got it, the car was a blotchy mess.  It still needs a paint job, but it is looking better and better.

By the way, the rear quarters were painted in the driveway by me with some rattle cans of lacquer...

Thanks.  Yeah, it doesn't seem like the same car cosmetically.  The tops of the rear quarters are still a mess (the valleys next to the trunk).  But the car is not embarassing at all now.  Shows up well...

Lou, I had a quick look over the 56 and it's been nicely maintained. It's not fully restored, for instance the sabrespokes  have been painted or powdercoated, I am not sure if the cloth on the seats is correct, but all in all a nice tidy car which I'd be happy with if I owned it.  Phil

To answer my own questions - Cadillac Hotel Miami Beach Fla. Just "renovated" as a Marriot Hotel. I always worry when I read that places like this have been renovated, it can often [but not always] mean all the original features have been removed. Like mag wheels and a 350 small block in a 53 Eldo if you get my drift.........

My 1955 Fleetwood (the "Blue Mistress") all cleaned up and ready for wedding duty!  My daughter Caroline is getting married this Saturday and this is the car we are using.  Here's hoping for mild temperatures (this car doesn't have A/C -- yet!).

2/3 of the paint is the original factory lacquer.  Original chrome.  Original "Dirilyte" gold V's front and back (just polished, not plated). Interior is all original, except for new carpet.

The car really needs full cosmetic restoration.  But this is a good example of what a low-mileage survivor can look with after a lot of effort in cleaning, sanding, polishing, etc.  BTW, when I tried to clean the rear seat with upholstery cleaner (after taking them out to get good access to the stains), the solid blue fabric faded.  It seems that some of the dye in the bolsters came off.  Rats.  So now the bolsters look sort of medium blue, instead of the darker blue that they should be.

The last picture is what the car looked like when I got it.

Things did not go smoothly.  The oil pressure sender unit failed on the way from the rehearsal dinner to the hotel.  So the OIL light came on and stayed on.  Not knowing for sure whether the engine was about to blow up or if it was a sender was very stressful.  I abandoned the car at a gas station, borrowed a modern car and drove home that night (90 minutes) to retrieve a spare sender.  Came back the next morning and installed the replacement sender.  All was fine after that and the car performed flawlessly at the wedding itself.  But the pucker factor was high for half a day or so...

Nice to see a shot of your car. She is a beauty! Years ago I had a 1956 CDV that looked to be a similar pastel yellow colour. Take some 0000 steel wool (4 zero) and Spray Nine to that scuffed whitewall before the curb scuff becomes too tough to remove. Clay/Lexi

Edit: Is it just me or are those garage doors "Mountain Laurel" in colour???!!!

Phil, Spray Nine is a general purpose cleaner that is available over here in a hand pump spray bottle. It is similar to Fantastic, (perhaps a product that you may be aware of). Spray Nine seems to work well in cleaning white walls. Your house sounds a bit like 'Cadillac Heaven'! A '57 Cadillac cloth sofa...wow. Clay/Lexi

Thanks Clay, has it got bleach in it? We have a "multi surface cleaner" in a bottle like that which has bleach in it. Also I can get that grade of wire wool, but wouldn't w fine scotchbrite be better [no fear of leaving metal particles in the rubber? Looking at that photo it looks like my car won't fit in the garage yet the opening is 96 3/4 inches. The car fits like a Dinky Toy in its box! I had to cut an opening in the wall and put in double doors so I can get in the driver's door!

Phil the bottle mentions that the product contains sodium metasilicate, Alkyl, Dimethyl Benzl, Ammonium Chloride, N-Alkyl, and Dimethyl Ethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride. It's all Greek to me! They claim it to be a superior multi-purpose cleaner that is tough on grease and grime. Auto use is recommended including tire cleaning on their web site. It is also effective at killing all sorts of viruses. It does seem to work well. Check this link out. Clay

http://www.spraynine.ca/product/spray-nine-heavy-duty-cleaner-7

Edit: Best of all it looks like it is made by Permatex, who make great automotive  related products. Product was invented in 1956 and was originally used to clean white wall tires.

Thank you Lou! I believe she is posing with a 1/43 scale cast model of a (1956) Series 75. GLM made them 2 or 3 years back. The female appears to be a resin cast model. Got to love diorama miniatures. That is also very close to Lexi's color. Clay/Lexi

Coming from Roger, the master model maker, that is quite a compliment. But yes, I am almost certain that is the GLM 1/43 scale model of the 1956 Series 75 of which they claimed to have made 299 of. They also said it was the limousine model but there appears to be no divider window and the bench seat does not look like they copied the leather original. I'm guessing it is actually the Series 75 Eight Passenger Sedan. Still, this is a highly detailed model. Lots of different models of classic Caddies were and I believe still are being offered by them usually (if not exclusively) on Ebay. Clay/Lexi

The Cadillac occupants faired much better than the other car. The Cadillac did not take a direct hit to the chassis rail which allowed the "soft" part of the car to absorb the impact. Either way, people were hurt, no seatbelts.
