Motor case is black with a red Delco-Remy tag.  Part going into the transmission is bare cast metal.

I wondered the same thing about the cast part on my starter. I decided since it was cast iron and not aluminum I needed to paint it. But it looked good bare.

I have finally found a paint that look like metal for the front part of the starter,

and i have installed a new solenoid too (i know its not black, but i finally decided to let it on metal, so it dosent look too bad..)

I have found a delco-remy tag, i was not sure where to put it, so i have installed it as you see on the picture..

So it probably not look like the original but dosent look too bad  :)

Talk to south paw.  The link goes to the 61 62 technical threads.  If he does not list you in that group you cannot see them.
