1955 Cadillac Power Steering Interchange
« on: June 21, 2018, 06:05:27 AM »
The power steering gearbox is leaking on my 1955 Fleetwood and I note that a number of vendors have rebuilt ones for sale that are advertised as replacements for 1954-1958 Cadillacs.  These appear to be totally hydraulic units which I gather were used starting in 1956 and seem to differ from the earlier units that had a separate reservoir with 80 w gear oil for the gears.  Can the original type gearbox be replaced with the totally hydraulic one?  Thanks.

The safe bet is to have yours rebuilt. The 55 is different than the 56 and the 57 is different than the 56.

Tom,

I am getting ready to send off my '55 steering box to Lars Corp. to rebuild it.  They did the one in my Brougham and did a good job.
Let me know if you have questions.
