Metal cover mystery

I am just curious what the ivory colored metal piece is at the top of the transmission tunnel/hump on this 1962 Cadillac Eldorado.  Is this a modification of some type or did it come from the factory this way? Seems like it would have carpet over it to make it less conspicuous. This is not my car, but just a photo I have seen and it caught my eye as to what it was.  Thanks, Doug

Personally i dont have that metal piece over my carpet...
You can not count the time spent on a car, because it's a therapy!

That is the heater duct to the rear of the car. It should be under the carpet.

Thanks Russ. It looked like it was made for that location, but looked slapped together. If it is supposed to be covered by the carpet that would explain it. I've never seen my car without the carpet in it so didn't know that heat got pumped to the back as well as the front floor areas.   Is that standard on all models?  Thanks, Doug
