Advice needed. 1963 390 into my 61 Cadillac?
« on: August 20, 2018, 04:46:54 PM »
I wasn't really looking, but I happened on a clean 63 390 near me with a Wil-cap transmission adapter. My 61 Town Sedan currently has no engine and I happen to have a 1970 TH400 caddy transmission in the garage that should bolt up to the adapter they have on the 63 390. I know the 63 was a one year only engine. But for a few hundred dollars would it be worth the trouble? Would the engine mounts need to be modified? Looking for any advice or to be told its a stupid idea and why.

I'm pretty sure that the engine will bolt in okay but the transmission may take some cross member modifications or a newly fabricated unit. I know they put 62 engines in the very early 63's. Hopefully someone with actual experience regarding this swap will chime in.

Hi,
1963 was still using the same trans as the 61 and 62, same bolt pattern.
If you have a wilcap adapter, it will more than likely suit the GM small block pattern, which is different again to a 1970 Cadillac trans, which should have had the BOP (Buick Oldsmobile Pontiac) pattern.
Some GM transmissions fitted to bop pattern engines may have had dual pattern, which means it will fit both chev and bop pattern engines.
Picture attached shows chev on left, BOP on right.

Have any proof on that bold statement?  The 63 was an engineering selling point with the newly designed 390 engine.

Here are some photos of one I found in the wrecking yard. It sure looks like a factory installation. I took the intake manifold off it and test fitted my fuel injection unit on this car. I had a pretty close look at it as I did the test fit.

By 'pretty close look' you must mean you confirmed it is authentic numbers matching...  ;D

I bought a 63 with a 62 engine in it, guess the factory ran out of engines and stuck what was left over?

I don't buy it, as the 63 was marketing a new engine design. No way a 62 engine made its way in on the assembly line.

I didn't check serial numbers so can't claim definitively that the engine was installed at the factory. It could easily have been an engine swap. Didn't mean to rile anybody up.
