Body and Paint in Chicago?
« on: September 17, 2018, 06:10:32 PM »
Hi everyone!

I'm in the suburbs of Chicago, and looking for recommendations on quality shops in the area. I'm looking for honest work at reasonable rates. If anyone is local, or familiar with the area, do you have any recommendations?

Here's a quick summary of what I would likely need:

- cleanup of underside of the car (not sure if I will have this done, or tackle myself)
- metalwork for body
- paint body, engine bay, trunk, wheel wells
- chrome
- weatherstripping/seals
- interior (could also be done separately?)

A shop that is willing to work with me, and let me do as much as possible myself, would be ideal.

Thanks everybody!
Jerry

You say you are in a Chicago suburb.  Would that be a northern, southern or western suburb?

If northern, I would heartly recommend Bennett Coachworks in Milwaukee, WI.

Tell 'em Dave Yaros recommended them.

Dave: I'm in Roselle, which is just south of Schaumburg. Definitely Western Suburbs. Thanks for the recommendation! I'm not opposed to a longer drive up if their work is good! I'll be checking them out.

Jerry,

You say you are looking for "honest work at reasonable rates."  I think we all can agree that the $65/Hr cited rate (http://www.hotrodbuilders.com/FAQ.aspx)  is more than reasonable.

There are two guys at Bennett you would want to speak to about your project.  First is Bob Bennett, the owner/operator.  While he is on the run alot, you can get a hold of him by phone or email and make an appointment to come in for a conference.

I would recommend that you also ask/require the body shop manager to also be present when you visit.  A tour of the body shop coupled with well put questions will convince you Bennett Coachworks is worthy of your consideration.

On my perusal of the above web site I noted mention of a possibility of them even coming to you (if the stars and moon align correctly?).

Check them out, you won't regret it!

God I'd kill for 65 an hour here.  Northern VA doesn't have any shops that I know of that are that low.

Dave,

Thanks for all the great information! Have you personally had work done there?

If they are willing to see the car by me that would be fantastic. I know pictures can't always explain the full situation without seeing the car. And it would be a lot easier than having the car towed to Milwaukee!

Jerry,

Yes, I have had work performed by them.  It is my "go to shop"  The work I have had done was mechanical, not body.  However, I worked in a body shop half a century ago.  As part of checking them out I toured the body and trim shops.  Based on both work experience and observations I was more than favorably impressed!

Talk to Bob about viewing the car.  I have no idea what the prerequisites, if any, are for them coming to you?

I take it your car is not able to be driven?  My Hagerty towing insurance covers a distance of 250 miles, which would get you a round-trip to Bennet Coachworks from you location.

No, she has not been in good driving shape for many years.
The fact that I just pulled the engine and transmission might also make it tough!  ;D

Good idea to check my insurance for towing. I will reach out to Bob and see what he says.
I'll be sure to post back with any updates!
