Swapping a 59 390 engine into a 55
« on: October 28, 2018, 05:10:48 PM »
Hi Guyís,
Iím back in the Cadillac scene again with a 55 Coupe Deville project. The original engine is seized solid. Iíve tried all the tricks to free it up but itís too far gone. A couple of months back I picked up a 390 engine from a 59. It turns over great by hand, itís a long block but missing all external accessories including the harmonic balancer.

My question is can I swap all of the components over from the seized engine and use the 55 transmission with it? The engine blocks look identical.

Thanks,

Alex

Yes Cadillac blocks from 55 to 61 are the same. The trans will bolt up. Figuring out the rest of the stuff will be fun. I guess you will have to use the 55 water pump and possibly the intake manifold to insure the TV rod is in just the right spot.

I'm not so sure about the ability to use the '55 transmission. A '56 would, but I doubt that the '55 flywheel will bolt on the '59 crankshaft.

1962 is the same as well. The 63 390 is different.

I believe the hormonic balancer hasa different weight than the 55. Also exhaust manifolds willbe different ad the ports are larger on the 390. Use a 56 passengerside exhaust manifold and a 390 passenger side manifold on the driver side . It is a very tight fit though. Good luck.
