1956 Generator Pulley
« on: May 06, 2019, 06:12:15 PM »
Anyone know what color the generator pulley & it's fan was on a 1956 Cadillac that was also AC equipped? A vintage picture posted earlier on this Forum showed a '54 Caddy on the assembly line. Although it looked non-AC, it's generator pulley appears black but the fan of the generator appear to be perhaps zinc plated. As the '56 generator pulley is a 2 piece unit I was wondering if the double pulley part was semi-gloss black but it's fan was originally zinc plated as well, (as per the '54 assembly line shot). The Authenticity Manual confirms that the generator was semi-gloss black, but it does not address the color of the pulley & fan of this unit. One would think that this notation would apply to the entire generator as a complete unit, but after seeing that assembly line photo I am now not so sure. Thanks. Clay/Lexi

I have seen generators with silver fans and black pulleys. I have seen all black and all silver. Here is a pic from a 1957 Cadillac film showing them dressing up a 1956 Cadillac engine bay for resale. Second picture is a factory shot from 1957. Third picture is from the factory in 1954.   Basically go fish   :o

So they are all over the map. Think I will go with a silver fan and semi-gloss black for the pulley as I like 2-tones! Found the attached picture on the net of what I think is the engine compartment of a '56 with that combination, (bottom red arrow pic). Also, is that silver bracket (top red arrow pic) that supports the 2 AC lines correct or is that an add on? Don't think I have ever seen one of those before. Clay/Lexi

Yes that a/c clamp is correct. Definitely for 55 and 56. Not sure about 54.

Both 1956 Cadillac factory a/c cars that I've owned had that a/c line clamps on them when I got the cars. Neither had been restored yet.
I had a question as to whether there may have been 2 clamps used per car?

Chuck I would like to know myself. Were two or just one clamp used? Attached is a shot of an AC equipped car with 2 clamps. Clay
